Villages Valley

LECRIN VALLEY

15 kilometres to the south of Granada, we enter the Valley of Lecrin that meets the south western shelter of the impressive wall of the Sierra Nevada, amongst deep gulleys and rough mountain tracks. It's physical shape is taken from the high hills that model the valley (Cerro del Caballo to 3050 m) to the soft undulations at the bottom where it creates a microclimate protected from the cold northern winds by the mountainous walls of the Sierra Nevada. It allows the cultivation of citrus plants forming part of it's beautiful scenery.

The story seems to have been retained in this valley, a spontaneous garden where the continuous music of clear free running water invites meditation, fantasy, relaxation and intimacy with nature.
Besides the largely populated Padul and Durcal, a multitude of small villages populate the hillsides. Between vineyards, olives and almonds and cherries with their flowers at the end of winter lie the villages of Conchar and Cozvijar. The prehistoric caves in the area below del Arroyo de la Laguna, provide a thought provoking interlude in the journey.
Rivers and streams run in picturesque gulleys looking for more level areas such as Rambla e Cijancos. Los banos de Urquizar flow with water having medicinal properties, while above it Acequias and Niguelas are prominent with their white houses across the river Torrente.

Numerous springs are found deep in the streets of Albunuelas, and in the heart of the valley, Saleres, Restabal, Melegis, Chite, Talara and Mondujar make up a group of villages submerged amongst oranges lemons and olives.Flour mills, ancient muslim castles and typically simple abundant farms complete this brilliant yet tranquil spot.

Talking of gastronomy, decide not to get lost in the fennel stews, batarines de Cozvijar ( a local speciality ) and the wine of Conchar. A large period was dominated by the Muslims that influenced the traditional cooking of the area. For those restless amongst us, we recommend Bunji jumping or trekking and for the more peaceful activities nothing more than a good horse ride or an interesting journey on foot or a bike ride in the natural beauty of the area. Shooting and fishing is available in this corner of real paradise. Don't forget the unique situation of the valley being in the middle of an area comprising Granada, Sierra Nevada, La Alpujarra and the Tropical Coast.
