THE ALPUJARRAS
|
 |
“ The Alpujarra
is a natural place, magnificent, warm, a paradise on earth”
From the high hills of the
Sierra Nevada to the fertile valley that separates it from Lujar
and Contraviesa, spreads a variety of impressive landscapes, a
magical land where time
seems to have remained. Amongst streams and rivers, leafy woodlands are
vineyards, fig trees and almonds. It is a steep mountainous region of
incredible broken landscapes, scattered with contrasts that have resulted
in a climatic and altitudinal sequence that allows one to gaze from the
alpine landscape of the Sierra Nevada to the Costa Tropical.
Small regions have known how to conserve the beauty and mystery in a
manner so obvious of the
Alpujarra. It’s villages and people have maintained, clearly intact, its
customs, traditions and forms of life. |
 |
Lanjaron
- with it’s famous health spa open to all . Orgiva – access to
the Alpujarra Alta. In the Balcon de la Alpujarra – Cañar, Soportujar
and Carataunas hasten us to what awaits us.
El Baranco del Poquiera
appears quickly at the bend of a curve. Pampaneira, Bubion and
Capileira hang on elevated rocks towards Mulhacen and Veleta. A
winding path takes us across to Pitres,
Portugos and Busquitar and to the highest populated hamlet in
Spain – Trevelez.

The gastronomy has
it’s base in a various and rich agriculture and a culinary tradition
expertly conserved. Stews and oven
dishes abound in the region and to accompany these dishes there is
nothing better than the wine “Costa”, a claret of great reputation
coming from the most impressive vineyards of Andalucia, in the Sierra de
la Contraviesa, created by the Mediterranian and an altitude of
between 600 and 1400 metres.
And finally, the many, many fiestas celebrated by the people supplying a true
ethnic treasure and local custom with the Fiesta of theMoors and Christians or
The Funeral of Zorro. This wealth of folklore complements a musical culture,
where El Trovo is the composition that symbolises most the Alpujarra. |
